COURSE DESCRIPTION:
 
The Western/English Horsemanship 100 -Level Course is designed for the novice or beginner who has had little or no exposure to horses or riding. Students will learn horses and riding from the "ground-up" in which the very basics of horsemanship is taught. The instructor tries to match each students abilities with a specific horse while keeping in mind everyone's safety is of the highest concern. All classes are conducted at Sanderson Stables, located on the corner of Union and Washington Streets in Cygnet, Ohio 43413; phone 655-2253. Sanderson Stables owns and maintains horses, tack, and grounds specifically for appropriate instruction. This course can also be taken as many times as the student desires. NOTE: Credit courses begin the end of August, end of February, and Summer Sessions. Non-credit sessions or courses can match the credit times if desired or on the customers schedule. Please contact us for any registration or scheduling questions. We operate flexible schedules. We also offer Web Based Distance Learning Modules on this site.

1. Organizational Meet at Classroom

A. Introduction to Course and Instructor

B. Sign Registration and Waiver forms

C. Pass out materials, Workbook, Maps, etc.

D. Students sign class time sign-up sheets

E. Arrange car pools if needed

F. Take Attendance against Rosters
 

2. First Barn Meet

A. Barn/Arena Tour and Safety Rules

B. Tack Room Procedures

C. Preparing the horse for riding, leading, safety, grooming,

Saddle and bridling; each student will participate.

D. Handling the horse on the ground and the saddle.

E. Riding styles, tacking and Untacking the horse.

F. Each Student will mount-up, ride, and dismount

G. Take attendance against Rosters
 

3. Second Barn Meet

A. Assign Students to horses

B. Students work on grooming, saddling, bridling, etc.

C. Demonstration of proper mounting and dismounting.

Check for proper fitting and girths. Demonstrate a walk,

Stop, turning and backing-up.

D. Demonstrate proper rein control and basic riding position

E. Demonstrate proper controlling aids, legs, hands, voice,

weight, etc.

F. Discuss groundwork; parts of the saddle and bridle.

G. Have each student ride the walk to halt plus backing and

Turning. Then practice if needed.

H. Check attendance against rosters.
 

4. Third Barn Meet

A. Practice the riding, walk, halts, backing, turning, and circles.

B. Practice hands and voice aids.

C. Review parts of the Horse.

D. Review various previous lessons.

E. Practice riding activities and exercises.

F. Check attendance against rosters.
 

5. Fourth Barn Meet

A. Introduce riding with one hand.

B. Practice riding, walk, halts, backing and turning.

C. Introduce the trot.

D. Discuss markings, balance, gaits, and review book work.

 

6. Fifth Barn Meet

A. Practice walk and trot.

B. Practice improving riding positions.

C. Practice leg and weight aids.

D. Discuss and prepare students for written and riding test.

E. Check attendance against rosters.
 

7. Sixth Barn Meet

A. Review past sessions.

B. Practice riding in all areas.

C. Prepare for riding test-pattern cones.

D. Check attendance against rosters.
 

8. Seventh Barn Meet

A. Riding Test

B. Introduce canter if appropriate.

C. Check attendance against roster.
 

9. Eighth Barn Meet

A. Practice riding

B. Written Test

C. Final Class evaluations
